RECOLLECTION

I first remember Grandmother’s house when we went to spend the night after Grandfather had died, must have been in the late 1940’s. I remember the fish pond and the gold fish, grandmother cutting the boxwoods, the darkness of the house, sitting at the dining room table and being served food (and bell pushed on the floor??).

Then in college I would go to Richmond and stay at Grandmother’s. We would sit for hours in either the library or the octagonal room and I would listen to story after story. Then there seemed to be five of everything: 5 copies of various books, 5 secretaries, 5 portraits, 5 chairs, etc. I remember taking her to see Laurence of Arabia and then staying out until 3:00 am or so going to the Four Leaf Clover and driving around town.

In the summer of 1967 when working at MCV, I had the pleasure of living in the home when Grandmother was in the nursing home. Got to read many of the books, enjoy the yard and grounds, have many dinners on the back porch and patio and talk with Aunt Martha and Uncle Warwick as they began their walk together each evening through the driveway.
